It was known as the Buffalo Municipal Airport. It is among the oldest known airport in the country, it opened in 1926 where the first mail service and passenger flight began in 1927. After the acquisition made by the acquired by the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority (NFTA) in 1959, its name was changed to the Greater Buffalo International Airport.
